Ok so I just finished the audio book ‘I, Jedi’  it’s a book centred around Corran Horn and it’s told in the first person.  Which is a pretty unique concept for Star Wars, considering that I don’t think its been repeated since.

That being said it wasn’t bad.. in fact it was very interesting.
Lots of adventure. It’s placed just after the last book of the 3-part series ‘Jedi Academy’ and in fact includes many of the aspects of the 2nd and last book ‘Dark Apprentice’ & ‘Champions of the Force’  which for the most part focuses on Kyp Durron a young Jedi that seems like he has the potential to be even stronger than Luke Skywalker, and the disembodied spirit of Exar Kun the Lord of the Sith; but told through a different perspective.

It seems Corran Horn, or Keiran Halcyon as he goes by at the new Jedi temple in Yavin 4 is the first sarcastic and cynical Jedi, or at least Jedi in training.

Which is something I like.

He even points out with reason to Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade many times the particular situation and the likely outcome, and almost guides Luke Skywalker along the correct path sometimes.

So how did he become to be one of the new generations of Jedi?

Basically in the war against the empire he was part of the Corellian Security Force, and later joined Rogue Squadron (the one that later took down the Death Star), and finds he has latent force powers.  He then discovers after returning home from the war that his wife Mirax is missing, and instead of jumping in to use his security force undercover & infiltration experience to find her, somehow Luke convinces him to come to the Jedi temple to train to develop these powers.

He has 2 main ones that are important.  He can cast a ‘circle of responsibility’ which basically means he can feel people emotions all around him. This is also what tells him that while his wife is missing, she is still alive and not gravely injured.
And then also he has a force power that is usually aligned with the Dark Side, and that is that of illusion.  He can cast illusions into people minds to make them believe something happened even though it didn’t.

Anyway he trains for 10 weeks… which is a surprisingly short time at the Jedi Academy, gets pretty good, and is a critical person in directing the other Jedi to stop Exar Kun.  He always manages to stay in the Light side of the force and never seems to waiver, which definitely can’t be said for the other Jedi in training in the story.

Kyp Durron is the first Jedi by the way, that takes his power and does something constructive with it.. even though its also essentially destructive.

He just begins eradicating Imperials on a mass scale.

All this talk that you hear from movies and TV shows of.. ‘we can turn them back, you can’t take a life… that’s terrible, even.. 2 wrongs don’t make a right’
What happens when the lives you’re taking have been responsible for taking millions of other lives and they have every intention to take millions more? You can see the path of destruction and because you feel like being all noble at one point in time, because of your actions…millions more die.

But eventually that person comes around and all is resolved despite the fact that many millions are dead.

Is that really the happy ending we think it is?   I don’t think so.

So anyway Kyp Durron just decides to take on the power of the Dark Side with help from Exar Kun, even though in his mind he is doing it for the right reasons.

Wait… now I’m pretty much reviewing the Jedi Academy books.

But anyway, the story of I, Jedi from the 1st person perspective of Corran Horn is pretty decent.  You get more insight into the different powers of a few of the newer Jedi.

And you get a different perspective from the same story that you heard in the last 2 books, which is actually really refreshing.

I would really recommend this book, but ….only provided that you’ve listened to the entire ‘Jedi Academy’ 3 part series first.

Check out the information page at wookiepedia here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/I,_Jedi

The next book I get to listen to is ‘Children of the Jedi’  which is the 1st part of a 3 part series called the ‘Callista Trilogy’.

I’m looking forward to it

Listening length: 2 hours 55 mins
