So, I’ve just started listening to my latest audiobook.  It’s by Ernest Cline, the same guy that wrote possibly one of the greatest books I’ve ever read / listened too- Ready Player One.

And I’ve got to say, this book is shaping up to be almost as good, if not as good as that book.

It’s not a continuation of the story, but a stand-alone story, yet it uses many of the same references.

Basically the plot is that a 19 year old kid finds out that the video games he loves to play have been guiding him to become a war combatant, and that the current video game he is playing- duly called ‘Armada’ is a simulated training game which is preparing the world for a real Alien invasion, and that the mechs/ drones that the control in the game are actually identical to the ones that they will be controlling in the fight for the human race when shit begins to go down.

There’s twists and turns; there’s so many references to movies, tv shows and games; and the way it is told is amazing, it’s like it presents the plot from the game, the plot the government (in the book) tells you, and then even then the character its poking logical holes in that and coming to his own conclusions.  Its incredibly interesting.  And to be quite honest I’m hoping that it won’t end.
I’m currently on chapter 19 out of 28.  Which means I’ve only got 2 hours & 50 mins to go.

And I know, because I’ve already checked audible.com that Ernest Cline hasn’t written any other books… so I’m a bit bummed about that.

It’s obviously not ended yet, but I would already thoroughly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a bit of escapism.  In fact its like the ultimate escapism, its like its validating all the tv shows, movies, music, video games etc that you’ve used to escape from your own reality and is using all of them to help construct an incredibly interesting story.
