Quick: Audio version is too fast, READ the book.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I’ve always wanted a version of the bible that summarises everything succinctly and that gets rid of all the crappy language that we should have done away with 400 years ago.

All the ‘thou’ kind of nonsense.

Yet while this book does it, and presents the idiocy, and sometimes just down right immoral behaviours that you knew existed in the bible in a funny and interesting way, … there is just SO much information in the bible.

I think the ACTUAL book where you have to read, and can take time to analyse some of the absurdities would be better.

Also in the actual book there are cartoons – a picture says a thousand words… I imagine that would help quite a bit.  But of course the audiobook version doesn’t include that.. and so overall the information and absurdities wash over you too quickly, without you really having the time to make much sense of them.

What other book might you compare God Is Disappointed in You to and why?

I’m not sure.  I’ve read and listened to a few religious or ‘explaining life’ books yet i’m not sure this can be compared to anything, at least not properly.

‘God is not great’  kind of just gives you ammunition for arguing against religious people.. but which after a while you get bored of it.

‘An Atheist’s guide to Christmas’ is quite decent, because you can hear people’s reasoning for why they don’t need God in their lives to live a moral life. Yet in comparison to the bible, the people inside it apparently do. Especially the ‘chosen’ people

‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents Earth’ is probably the closest thing to this book, yet it is much funnier and much shorter.  It presents mostly factual information in a funny yet also compelling way.

Still ‘God is Disappointed in You’ , I really feel is a much better book if you spend the time to actually read it. You need time to process it. So i’m not sure audio format is the best thing for this book.

To be fair though, i wouldn’t have chosen it, if it wasn’t in audiobook format.

Which character – as performed by James Urbaniak – was your favourite?

No idea.  It’s summarising the bible, there are just so many characters in the bible.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

If it was a whole bunch of cartoons like little comedy sketches all put together to form a movie, I would definitely go to see it.  This book really needs to be represented visually.

If it was done in cartoon format it would be great, you can do anything with cartoons and not limited to people’s physical limitations.

I think it would be hilarious as well.  Especially if they didn’t advertise it as a summary of the many volumes of the bible, but just as a story, and see how many religious people actually get it and can see parallels with their own faith, from where they supposedly get morality and guidance from.

So yes, I’d go see that.  But it’d have to be in the right format.

Any additional comments?

If it wasn’t in audiobook format i wouldn’t read it.  Yet in reality it needs to be gone over several times visually.

A movie, or youtube cartoon channel with all the little sketches could work out perfectly though.
