Well the title pretty much describes the gist of it.
In trying to consolidate the websites I have, I migrated 2 websites, and will migrate a 3rd to namecheap.com.
They have been very good with my Australian project, which is having its own business account… and I’ve found them easy to deal with, the customer support fantastic and very patient, and the layout reasonably easy to understand for a beginner to websites like myself.
So, this website has been migrated to namecheap.com. That officially happened in April, and it looked like everything went through…because it was showing as much on the dashboard of my account… however it seems I didn’t change the DNS… (Domain Name Server) so actually the updated files since April were instead being sent towards my old hosting company instead of my new one.
For those that have no idea what I’m talking about… in very simple terms (and I’ve had to learn this myself ((with great patience from a friend)) from having my own website), it works like this.
Your domain name is the thing you type into the top url box. For this site it is: https://sippingfromthebrewingpot.fyi
That is just a name though… it doesn’t mean anything if its not connected to anything.
The content is originally written on my computer (saved backups etc) and then uploaded to a server- which is basically a hard-drive that a hosting company has.
A hosting company is one that has the hard drive and provides the way to put the information online. The normal address (IP address) they give you is a string of numbers 163.1.52.179 something like this.
You then link or redirect your domain name, to this string of numbers and up comes the information.
You also need a site management component. Otherwise you can’t organise it in a way that’s nice to view. It’ll be literally like going through a hard-drive on someone’s computer but unable to open any of the files.
For this I use WordPress, and then a certain theme that goes with it… to organise it in a way that I want it to be viewed and has some nice functionality.
Also, a friend provided me with some custom code so that it has increased functionality than its supposed to.
But the point is… since all the recent articles have been sending to the old server/ hosting company… and I’ve recently cancelled that contract…. I’ve lost all of that data.
Shit.
Mistake made, learnt from that mistake.
So I’m currently having to upload all the stuff again. And… like an idiot I didn’t take a recent backup of the site, because its currently sitting at 13gb of information….which… is quite a bit.
Again, lesson learnt.. I’ll be backing up the site far more regularly.
This is mainly a note to myself…so I don’t do this again, but articles lost:
