Plot
Basically though, the main character is a smuggler called Salem, a guy who has state of the art, decades ahead of time nano-bots working inside his body helping to make him stronger, smarter, and an altogether better version compared to normal people.
The setting is an apocalyptic waste world with a twist. Yes, it’s in the future, but it turns out the God was real, and he quit on mankind, leaving the earth to be taken over by demon-kind.
The world that exists now has seen humans wage wars against demons, lost twice, and has reluctantly settled in to tense, dangerous but somehow not currently fighting world.
Something is happening in this world, and Salem must work with new people, and rely on old friends to get to the bottom of it and start making a difference again.
Interwoven philosophies
The story does a great job at interweaving different philosophies, essentially allowing all religions to come under 1 all powerful GOD. For which under that lies 14 demi gods, of which Vali, Vadar are 2 Norse gods that come under these in the story.
As per the title, the story also deals with the 7 princes of hell, the fall of the angels out of God’s grace as described in Christian mythologies, but goes against the grain (in a good way) in explaining that Lucifer was actually the entity of reason and logic, which came down to earth to enlighten mankind, not doom it.
The only book series that I’ve listened to so far that also deals with this part of the mythology is the Circles in Hell book series by Mark Cain,
which delves into the original history and progression of the mythology of God, angels, Demons and devils, rather than simply stating the modern day belief of those that adhere to a religion, of what they believe Lucifer Morningstar/ Satan is all about.
The Secret History of the World: As Laid Down by Secret Societies also states as much.
To Beat the Devil deals with different immortal beings, the use of magic and technology to upgrade oneself and a whole host of other concepts.
All of it makes for a really interesting listen.
Listenability
The author M.K Gibson, was actually the same author of Villain’s Rule, a series which I’ve listened to book 1 and 2 so far, and they have been fairly average.

Thus I was incredibly surprised when I listened to this. A quarter of the way through, I had to check that it was the same author.
This is incredibly well thought out, the narration is perfect, and overall the story just slows incredibly well.
Easy to listen to, fun, entertaining, and you even learn thing, what with the different interwoven philosophies.
Recommendation
Again, if you’re a fan of Sci-fi or fantasy, then this is a must listen for you.
If you weren’t a fan of M.K. Gibson’s other works, then I honestly recommend just giving this one a try, its much different from his previous books.
Well recommended and definitely worth your credit.
