Love this series! More, more, more please!

I was happily surprised when this book came out, I love this series, (see my series review here) and Drew Hayes’ writing and really thought the 2nd Hand Curses book was the latest book of his, but this came out just after. Score.

I love Kirby Heyborne as the narrator and voice actor.

The voice of Fred is done so perfectly, it just suits his character so well, meek mild mannered, yet full of emotion as well. And his portrayal of the other characters, Bubba, Richard, Art all have their individual voices, and Gideon (the dragon) is of course very good.
Loved the addition of new characters such as Wallace, Art’s agency/ special forces friend. You can feel the size of the guy, big heart but a bit stupid with the performance of Heybourne.

There was a weird moment Chapter 22, 3.40 where the narrator states “also chapter 125” , i’m sure it was just missed in editing, but will be revised in future editions.

–The structure is the same as the previous 3 books, 5 separate stories, definitely separate yet building on each other.
–1. An Interview at the Agency
–Fred is called into the Agency to see about his accounting freelancing where he’s briefed on what kind of roles he’ll have to take, hours and level of protection he’ll be given.
–2. An Appraisal in the Castle
–After a fight with something the Agency doesn’t mention, a castle is left empty and an appraisal needs to be conducted for the agency as all previous owners and heirs were all part of the same criminal gang, thus Fred and his team are called in.
–3. An Appraisal in the Carnival
–One of Richard (the were-lion’s) pack members inherits a carnival and wants Richard to invest, Richard calls in a favour from Fred to appraise the Carnival and see what changes can be made to make it viable. But.. someone doesn’t want them there
–4. A Negotiation at the Table
–Fred is asked to a meeting with Grand Mage- Cindy, with concerns that since Amy (Fred’s mage friend) is now part of his ‘Vampire coven’ Fred should not interfere with previous contracts signed with the society of mages, yet as Fred finds out…there’s something not quite right with the contracts.
–5. An Inventory in the Base
— The agency calls in Fred again to run an inventory on a secret base where Fred’s agency friend Arch’s former team are located.  Turns out an enemy from Fred’s past is planning a trap.

Each story was great, and I’m eagerly waiting for the next instalment.

This series is a real pleasure for me to listen to. It’s not that I can’t wait to hear what happens next, it’s not that kind of book, each little story concludes relatively well by itself, ..it’s just that the snippets into Fred’s life with these books just flows so well and I just want to hear more and more.

Plus, I AM still waiting to hear more about the little Easter egg gem that was dropped in Book 2 Chapter 2, where we find out that the laws and customs that guide the para-normal world are published in plain sight in the game manual for ‘Swords, Spells & Stealth’ which is an obscure role-playing game. Ie. another book that Drew Hayes writes, inferring there could be some cross over in future books

Recommendation
Listen to this series, I think most people will enjoy it.  Not completely necessary for you to start at book 1, but it would help.
The series is funny, well written, excellently narrated/ voice acted, has an amazing story and has potential to go even further.
