1st of all, I’ll start with my recommendation…so, would I recommend this series?
In a word, no.
By listening to this series, you get the overwhelming sense of “oh shit, I could do this”
” if this gets sold to audible, and it seemingly has very little value…Then I could make a series like this at least with SOME value”
The topics covered are typically American things, things that don’t necessarily propagate all the way around the world, yet the rest of the world are aware of…but essentially has little to no meaning for them…in terms of how it will affect their life.
- Slavery,
2. Sex Ed,
3. Evolution,
4. Medicinal marijuana,
5. Judaism,
6. Poetry,
7. Comics,
8. Guns,
9. Mexican Americans,
10. Cars.
So essentially the premise is that a father attempts to teach his son things that are not being taught in Texan public schools.
Yeah, you saw evolution on the chapter list….That’s right.
What you get is an overwhelming sensation that American (or at least Texan) public schools are absolute shit, and we should feel bad for them.
The father organises the son to meet a bunch of people that are passionate in the topics and uses these meetings to get a whole bunch of different perspectives.
I think that this is the most valuable thing in this series. If it wasn’t for this, and the fact that the production values are pretty good, I would not listen to it….I would have given up ages ago in fact.
Likeable personalities?
Mmmm not really to be honest… they’re not terrible people, and they’re not dumbasses either, and it should be praised that the father is trying to teach his son more of the world around him… it’s just that the father’s personality is like a hipster or something… which gets a little annoying after a while.
All the issues that he stands for, fine.. not so much of a problem with that… but the way that they explore them, and the things pointed out along the way… and the tone of voice…it’s just annoying after a while.
Here’s an example: Episode 7 on Comic books …the liberal hippy shines through very strongly in this one.
The dad just ends up spurting a bunch of crap, after admitting before that he grew up with traditional heroes like the incredible hulk and Spiderman, then when he finds out that what his sons favourite comic book heroes are spiderman, the Punisher & a variety of other…which all coincidentally are white & male… he ends up trying to say his favourite characters are all minorities & women..or some bullshit, with even the son being able to see through his bullshit. The father ends up trying to push the topic that “everything is whitewashed, and that his son needs to open his mind, blah blah”
“There’s a sort of white nationalist tint to your comic book preferences”
With his son constantly asking….”dad, what are you talking about?” And his dad having this as an answer:
This is his actual quote, just so you can make your own mind if he’s a hippy liberal douchebag,
“Like every father I wanted my child to semi-audically deconstruct his own gender, racial and class privilege through the lens of popular culture ”
…What an utter douchebag
They then go to interview a female Muslim comic book creator, that somehow wrote a comic book based similarly on herself. A female Muslim American hero.
Yeah, that sounds like every young boy’s dream…. or not.
She actually turns out to be the creative director for Marvel Comics now.
“What was it like for you, being a Muslim American woman working in a traditionally all male environment?”
Oooh dear.
It’s just a dad constantly patting himself on the back. And pawning his son as an excuse to learn about certain things himself and getting the chance to talk to some interesting people because of it.
Oh yeah, and you thought it might make up for all of this stuff by being funny… Nope, wrong again.
If anything it’s Jewish humour…Which you find out just translates to – lame.
The one on guns (episode 8), …Hmmm, yeah only in America. It’s so sad that people grow up in that environment.
Could have balanced it out a bit more. Yeah, guns in school is not a good idea, lying around the place no. But it IS fun.
Mexican studies (episode 9). Again wow, yeah America has some problems.
Once again you learn America is full of racism… New for Americans I realise, but not for the rest of the world.
Cars (episode 10), this is literally just father Neal teaching his son Elijah how to drive a car.
Apparently, Neal is an automotive journalist.
I’m honestly curious to see some of his writings/ reviews…Because his teaching of how to drive a car is so just painful, that I can’t believe an automotive journalist could 1. Drive a Prius, one of the most soulless cars out there, and
2. Be that shit at teaching how to drive a car.
It’s seriously like he has no passion for cars, and therefore wants to only pass on something of non-car culture.
Honestly, they do an interview with a lady that is a qualified expert on electric cars, and he keeps saying that his dream is to have a car where he doesn’t actually have to drive.
What kind of whacko automotive journalist wants a car where they don’t have to drive? As if they don’t enjoy driving. That’s just sad.
I feel so sorry for the son in this one, his dad doesn’t even practice safe driving.
Literally the sons first time in the driver’s seat, the father just says “1st turn on the car”
No idiot, 1st explain what the pedals are for, where your hands should be, and what the general theory of driving a car is like, THEN show by example, THEN get your son in the driver’s seat.
I honestly can’t believe it.
Then the son makes up some bullshit excuse that the car won’t turn left or something, and the dad tries positive reinforcement instead of just flat out being real with his son, and going “look son, turns out I’m pretty shit at teaching driving, and turns out you’re not great at listening and putting into practice my idiotic teaching… I’ll get a qualified drivers instructor for you that is hopefully passionate in his driving and teaching and moreover has common sense in their teaching, and you can stop making up bullshit excuses”
Hopefully in that situation the son won’t end up wanting to just get a Prius which is such a boring car and removes the fun of driving…But actually getting something that anyone with car culture would be proud of.
The only way I would maybe recommend this series, is if you like to have something to rage at. And liberal hippy / hipster douchebags is something that gets you all riled up… and then you can just let the rage fly. Here’s a link Extra Credit audible channel
Hahaha, it seems 1 person reviewed this before me:
