This book was surprising.  I originally thought I was buying a book about some super hero that had some sort of cape that gave him powers, but instead ended up accidentally purchasing this one.

…And, I’m really glad I did.

The books story, and kind of world that it’s written in …is pretty damn strange.

The book follows the main character, Felix who has the power to upgrade things.  Although he can only upgrade things that he owns.
The world that he lives in is a city that has been taken over by a super-villain, and this guy has made some changes, namely that ‘heroes’ have become outlawed- any caught heroing are placed in jail,  +  prostitution, and slavery are now also legal.  All with taxes and contracts, for which the majority of the population actually support.
The slavery is enforced by a magical contract which binds slaves to their owner.  Former heroes / captured heroes are often tortured and then offered up for sale as slaves, which …is good news for Felix, because he finds out that his power also works for the people that he owns.

Most of the story is his progression of restoring super-heroes, getting them back up to form, making money and basically empire building.  Although, his goal is for them to live relatively peaceful, un-tortured lives.  So… he is a kind of nice guy, but also seen as a villain by the normal heroes because he’s taking advantage of the whole ‘slavery’ new enforced rule from the Super-villain ruler.
This means that Felix is constantly at risk of being killed by these so called ‘heroes’ who eventually resort to very villain like tactics.

Listen-ability?

The book’s story is obviously quite controversial, but the fact that it’s set in a world not the same to ours… and of course.. its fictional.. , well anyway, once you get past that, it’s a very enjoyable listen.

In fact, I was recovering from surgery whilst listening to this book, and it was so addictive that i think i missed sleep due to constantly listening to more and more of it.

I would have listened to this all in one sitting if I could… but I couldn’t because my body needed to rest.

There are some plot holes though, there are definitely some things that are just glossed over…

I don’t know if i just missed these things, or they really weren’t there.
But a lot of the book is exploration of Felix’s (main character) powers and empire building… which to be honest, is pretty awesome.
The world is well set-up though, and I’m looking forward to a 2nd book, hopefully where we’ll hear more of the ‘glorious leader’ , the super-villain who has taken over society and perhaps Felix’s interactions with him.

Plus, knowing that the city became a city-state, there’s bound to be more influence from the outside world.. so that could lead to something interesting.

Recommendation?

If you can get over the controversial main aspect of the story..the whole legalisation of slavery kind of thing… then I probably would recommend this.

The narration is good, there is great character development and it’s written very well so that it just flows and flows.  Oh and it’s pretty funny at some times too, which is always nice.

If you don’t like super heroes…then this book clearly isn’t for you, but otherwise, I would give it a chance.
