Story & Setup
This book adds another dimension to the story as a whole as the crew manage to purchase passage back to the real world, with the help of Professor Goosewaddle.  Yes, Goosewaddle.

But things aren’t completely normal, they are still in their fantasy game forms, Tim is still a gnome, Dave is still a Dwarf, Cooper is still a disgusting half-Orc, and Julian is still an Elf…. But it means they all still have their powers.

Plus turns out that Mordred is still alive with significantly less time having been passed in the real world as to what they’ve experience in the game/ fantasy world.

The gang go after Mordred as he begins his usual tricks and threatens to bring back ‘the 4 horsemen’. (the middle school kids that he ‘rewarded’ by sending them into the fantasy world and allowing them to do what they want)

They enlist the help of some new characters, including:
Randy – a in-process reforming paedophile,
Dennis – a more sinister paedophile policeman,
Stacy – a regular, apparently reasonably attractive woman who speaks with a southern drawl
& of course Professor Goosewaddle – a genius Gnome wizard/ sorcerer, who decided to come with them from the fantasy world to check out this amazing place.

All of them including Katherine – who is now a vampire just add hilarious results to everything as they try to lure Mordred and stop a midget vampire.

The story is chaos and absolutely absurd most of the time!
But, it’s a lot of fun.

Story Structure
Either I got a bum copy of it, or the structure was more chaotic than it was meant to be, but because they essentially split the party at various times during the book, Katherine & Cooper going one way, and Tim, Dave, & Stacy going another, with Chaz & Professor Goosewaddle finding themselves separated at some point….the whole book has to jump around a lot.

Narration/ Performance
This has improved a lot over the previous books.

That’s not to say that the previous books were bad, its just that this is better.

They’ve added lots of new production niceities.
For instance voices on the telephone…you can hear the faded out/ muffled voices from the other side, actual lute strumming sounds when Chaz plays his lute,
and TV sounds when someone is watching porn on the TV (yes, that happens).

The voices of the new characters are hilarious as well.

I don’t exactly know where all of this is set, but I think it’s Mississippi, and they’ve gone for the whole redneck accents.

And it’s hilarious.  There are some seriously funny conversations and accents just because these redneck characters are more simple, yet racist, and just overall…well, rednecks.  And the narrator does these accents flawlessly.

Funny?
Yes, it’s funny, but only if you can get over all the disgusting stuff.

There’s a lot of poo, and diarrhea scenes whenever Cooper (the half-Orc) is involved…and a lot of description that goes along with this.  Too much description in my opinion.

But it feels like the author has done this on purpose to really stick it to these people out of spite or something for anyone that ever read his initial work and said.. there’s too much potty humour here.

But it’s one of those books where you end up rewinding 30 seconds to hear some hilarious description again, to be able to write it down and remember it for later.

This combined with the accents from the characters, especially the redneck characters…is just hilarious.
It’s one of those constantly chuckling to yourself kind of book.

Point is, if you’re listening to this when you’re at the gym or just generally out in public… you’ll definitely be getting some strange stares as you have a good chuckle to yourself.

Here’s some of the quotes that I wrote down:

Father in sporting store- “Where have you been little Donny? I told you it’s not safe to run off like that.”

Kid – “I was talking to this homeless guy (talking about Cooper) , he took off his clothes and told me to beat it.”

Cooper’s mind – ‘Oh shit.’  He wanted to tell the kid to fuck-off but didn’t want to be rude.

One of the horseman – “We’ll probably just burn this place to the ground before we go back because…..well, because of course we will.”

Dennis –  “You are not a nice person”
Tim – “You tried to rape me.”
Dennis- “Ooooohhh and how long are you going to hold that over me??”
Tim- “That only happened this morning.”

Dennis – There’s only one thing I want…..and that’s balls.   (said in a thick dumbass redneck accent)

Impact on the future of the series
This was a great addition.

I originally commented on my review of book 1 that it seems like this is a story that could just continue forever, with the gang constantly exploring new parts of the fantasy world, and doing little missions and stuff.

But this really adds to the series.

The fact that they come back to the real world, but not as themselves, still in their game characters bodies + still possessing their powers and everything,
meet up with Mordred again,
+ meet a whole bunch of new characters      well, it really adds value to the series as a whole.

In between the main books of the series is a bunch of supposedly parallel short stories, the first one being D6, then 2d6, 3d6, & 4d6.

For more information, read my review on these short stories here.
They really are a bit of hit and miss to be honest.  Some stories are very good, some… you could just sleep through.

But this book, and now the direction of the series after this book seems like its going in a good way.

Recommendation
I WOULD recommend this book, however of course, I would recommend listening to the 1st 2 books first.

For now, give the D6, 2d6 (in between books) a skip.

The 1st book isn’t actually THAT great, but this one is, but of course you should listen to 1st & 2nd ones before you listen to this.

Beware- there’s a lot of disgusting stuff …mainly poo descriptions in this series… if you can’t handle that…or at least be able to move past it, then you’re not going to be able to get to the good stuff and find this series funny.

Get a free trial of audible with 2 free books, listen to books like this for free, & then if you want….just quit before 30 days & you get to keep everything… sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
