So this is one of the Star Wars expanded universe books that I’ve actually listened to a few times, and I love it.

The plot revolves around the Sith Academy on Odacer-Faustin and the top ranking Sith Master there called Darth Scabrous who is chasing after the dream of immortality.  The Sith are of course the dark-side practicers of the force, and they always seem to be pushing the boundaries or what is possible.  From my point of view, some of the best books from the Star Wars universe is about exploring this aspect.

So anyway, Darth Scabrous’ plan is to get a hold of the Murakami orchid for which is sentient and has a special Jedi carer, then perform a unusual experiment and ritual that when ingested allows him to reach immortality.  For everyone else it turns them into hive-minded zombies, but for him, provided that he finishes the last part of the ritual will grant him immortality.

Anyway, the story combines the Sith academy stuff, which is one of the most interesting things about the Star Wars expanded universe in my mind with zombies.   It’s fantastic.

Just the whole setting that the story paints, you can really imagine the scenes inside the Sith academy and the interactions between the top Sith students and the Masters to see their scheming. I think John Glover, which does the narration and voices does a great job at really bringing everything to life.  You can really feel the darkness and power for each character, which is fantastic.  And I think the exploration of Darth Scabrous’ delving into new dark side powers is what makes this something that you just want more of.

I am surprised the reviews on audible were so bad because I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I think those that love the exploration of powers and the conflict between the Jedi & the Sith would love this book, especially fans of the Old Republic and the whole expanded universe.

I would definitely recommend this book.

For more information in the series I would recommend Wookieepedia http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Harvest_(novel)   and then you can see the novels before and after this one and where it fits into the Star Wars timeline, because what you get on audible doesn’t represent the entire Star Wars universe timeline.

That being said, check out an audio sample here: http://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Star-Wars-Red-Harvest-Audiobook/B004GVNIGC
